How to activate all variants on mac

Hi everyone! I am new to this community and have just started using the fonts. As a part time Cantonese tutor, I think this font will really help me save a lot of time. So I really appreciate it! However, I ran into a problem when I tried to use all variants (monotone and colour) on Mac. Basically, mac treats pairs like monotone regular and colour regular, monotone large jyutping and colour large jyutping as duplicates. So I can’t use the colour and the monotone variants at the same time because only one of them can be activated at a time. In short, my question is: Is it possible to install and activate all variants on mac?

Hi Sam, welcome.

No, the monochrome is designed to be a fall-back for color and never used together. The reason the monochrome was prepared was for devices that do not support color fonts; and they should be able to read what was prepared seamlessly. Think about you preparing a document for them, but they are reading it on a machine that only supports monochrome: the name of the fonts must be identical or else they would see a missing font warning.

The most straight-forward way of using monochrome “together with” color is simply to install-and-overwrite when you need the b/w (I do that routinely in testing). Because they are otherwise identical, your documents would now simply look b/w.

If you are thinking about print, or accessibility, the Jyutping colors work for all these cases:

From L → R are three different kinds of color-blindness, followed by complete grayscale “print”. People are often surprised at how uniform / readable the colors flatten to.
